Marginalia (n.pl.): 1. notes written in the margins of a text; 2. marginal notes or embellishments; 3. nonessential items.
This is an open-ended series of drawings which evolved in the margins of my practice during the years 2008 and 2009. The surfaces that they are made on were left-overs originally used to imprint paint onto a series of large paintings, and bear the traces of this process. In a similar way these small-scale works act as ‘catchment areas’ to capture the spill-over of side-lines and tangents to my main trains of thought at the time, functioning as an extension of my sketchbook. In hindsight, it emerges that a common thread running through them is the idea of boundaries, and the definition, construction and deconstruction of inside and outside.
